Market analysis of the broiler chicken sector

Written by Hamid Atharinejad

In analyzing the production and consumption levels of broiler chicken in Iran and neighboring countries, one of the main challenges is the lack of access to accurate and up-to-date information regarding population, per capita consumption, and production volume in each of these countries. This issue arises from the absence of a comprehensive and reliable statistical system in many countries in the region, especially in Iran's neighboring nations. Nevertheless, by utilizing various domestic and international statistical sources, it is possible to achieve estimates with over 90% accuracy.

Total population and annual chicken meat consumption: The total population of Iran and its 13 neighboring countries is approximately 590 million people. Given that per capita chicken meat consumption varies based on the economic and cultural conditions of each country, the total annual chicken meat consumption in these 14 countries is estimated at around 11 million tons. This figure holds particular significance in countries with large populations and varying levels of consumption.

Challenges in production and import: There is scattered information regarding the level of broiler chicken production in each of these countries, which makes it difficult to accurately analyze the production deficit compared to consumption. However, a general summary indicates that some of these countries require imports, while others in the region are capable of exporting their domestic production to the countries in need. This situation is particularly evident in countries with limited production and reliance on imports.

Factors affecting chicken trade and imports/exports: One of the key issues in this market is logistical considerations and transportation costs. A suitable infrastructure in terms of transportation facilities, especially the high transport costs, requires more detailed economic studies regarding the distance from production to consumption. In this analysis, factors such as transit routes, fuel costs, the economic situation of the countries, and their financial relationships should also be taken into account. These factors can directly impact the final cost and competitiveness of the products.

Production status in Iran: طبق آمارهای موجود، ایران به‌طور سالانه حدود 3 میلیون تن مرغ تولید می‌کند. با توجه به پتانسیل‌های موجود و افزایش برخی از عوامل مؤثر، این میزان تولید می‌تواند افزایش یابد. از این میزان تولید، حدود 500 هزار تن مازاد تولید قابلیت صادرات به کشورهای همسایه را دارد، به‌شرطی که زیرساخت‌های لازم برای تسهیل صادرات فراهم شود.

Export challenges: One of the major obstacles to accessing export markets is the lack of a cohesive and long-term policy from the government. Without strategic planning and government support, producers are exposed to various risks that hinder investment and long-term planning for export development.

Conclusion: Initial analyses indicate that Iran, as a major chicken producer in the region, has the potential to export poultry products to neighboring countries. However, logistical infrastructure, the economic policies of the countries, and transportation costs are factors that need to be carefully considered in order to ensure that trade between the countries in the region, especially in broiler chicken, is conducted efficiently and sustainably.

In future sessions, continuing this discussion and a more detailed examination, particularly regarding practical and operational solutions, could lead to more accurate analyses. Expert opinions in various fields can be influential in shaping operational plans that will ultimately result in maximizing production and export capacity in the region.
